An NT Service Control/Component for
The 3-Heights™ PDF Security Service is a Windows Service that automatically decrypts, encrypts, and sets permissions on PDF documents placed in watched folders.
Typical uses include:
- Restrict access to sensitive and confidential PDF documents
- Remove encryption on PDF documents, e.g. for long-term archiving in compliance with PDF/A or to allow for the documents to be amended
- Restrict the printing and re-use of PDF content that is published in the internet

The 3-Heights™ PDF Security Service supports all standard PDF encryption options and offers a wider range of encryption key lengths. Users can decrypt and encrypt PDF documents simply by "dragging & dropping" them into watched folders.
With the 3-Heights™ PDF Security Service you can:
- Install a Windows PDF Security Service Process
- Start and stop the service through the Windows services control window
- Control the service through a command line interface
- Configure any number of security threads
- Configure a watched folder per thread
- Configure individual security settings (passwords and permissions) per watched folder
The 3-Heights™ PDF Security Service provides the following PDF decryption and encryption features:
- Encrypt PDF documents with an owner password to restrict the permissions from being changed
- Encrypt PDF documents with a user password to ensure only authorized users can read them
- Decrypt encrypted PDF documents, provided that the applicable passwords are known
- Set the encryption key length (40, 48, 56, 64, .., 128-bit)
Passwords for the decryption and encryption are not visible to the normal user.
Permissions
The following permissions can be set with an owner password:
- Permit low resolution printing
- Permit the PDF document to be modified
- Permit content to be copied
- Enable adding or modifying annotations
- Enable form filling
- Support screen reader devices for the visually impaired
- Permit assembling
- Permit high quality printing
