The Indexing Service Companion is a web crawler utility that extends the functionality of Microsoft's Indexing Service* so that it is able to index and search content from remote websites hosted on any web server (including Unix/Linux/Apache), and also from ODBC databases. As such it can be used as a low cost alternative to Microsoft's Site Server 3.0 Search or the search facilities of SharePoint Portal Server.
